A paver patio that has gone lumpy, dished, or wobbly looks like a construction failure — and homeowners usually assume the worst and start pricing tear-outs. In central Ohio, that is rarely what is happening. Pavers themselves almost never fail; they are dense concrete or fired clay units that outlast the things holding them in place. What fails is one of the four layers around them: the joint sand between them, the bedding sand beneath them, the compacted base under that, or the edge restraint around the perimeter.
Each of those produces a different symptom, and each takes a genuinely different fix. Reading the symptom correctly is the whole job — it is the difference between a re-sanding visit and a base rebuild, and between spending a few hundred dollars and several thousand.
Start with the rocking test
Before anything else, walk the patio and put your weight on the pavers that look wrong. This one check splits every uneven paver patio into two camps:
- The paver stays solid underfoot. Whatever you are seeing — weeds, ants, gaps, low sand lines — is happening between the pavers. The support underneath is intact. This is a joint problem, and it is the cheap, common, entirely fixable case.
- The paver rocks, tips, or sinks under your weight. There is a void beneath it. Something below the surface has moved or washed away, and no amount of joint sand will bridge it. This is a bedding or base problem.
Then look at the patio after the next rain. Standing water is the second big signal. A paver patio is built with a slight slope so water runs off. If puddles now sit on it, either the surface has settled out of its original pitch or the base below has stopped draining — both worth knowing before anyone quotes you a finish.
Cause 1: joint sand has washed out
This is far and away the most common answer, and the least alarming. What you notice first is rarely the sand itself — it is the weeds, the ant hills, and a surface that has started to look faintly irregular even though nothing is obviously broken. Crouch down and look along the joint lines: if the sand sits a quarter-inch or more below the paver faces, you have found your problem. Ohio rain, pressure-washing, and ordinary time pull it out of the joints, and once it drops the pavers have just enough freedom to sit slightly out of plane with each other. That is the unevenness you are seeing.
The patio can look uneven from this alone, with no base problem whatsoever. Cause 2: bedding sand eroded under one area
When a single spot has dished while the rest of the patio sits true, water is almost always the reason. Runoff finds a path under the pavers — through an open joint, past a broken edge, or straight out of a downspout discharging onto the patio — and carries the fine bedding sand away with it. That leaves a void, and the pavers above settle into it.
Those pavers get lifted, fresh bedding is added and compacted back to the right height, the units go back in, and the joints are refilled. The repair itself is straightforward. The part that matters is finding the water. Re-set pavers over an unaddressed downspout will sink again, and the second repair is not free — so a redirected downspout or corrected grade is part of doing this properly.
Cause 3: edge restraint has failed
Every paver field needs something locking its perimeter in — buried edging, a concrete haunch, or an abutting hard surface. Without it, the outer row has nothing to push back against. Foot traffic and rain walk those pavers gradually outward, the joints behind them open up, and the loosening works inward from the edge over several seasons.
The tell is a patio whose middle looks fine while its borders have spread and gapped. Restraint has to be re-established before re-sanding — put fresh sand into a field that is still free to spread and it migrates straight back out.
Cause 4: freeze-thaw heave — the Columbus special
Central Ohio runs through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles a winter, and our clay-heavy soil drains slowly, so bases here stay wetter for longer than in better-draining regions. Saturated base material freezes, expands, and lifts the pavers above it; when it thaws, those pavers do not always settle back where they started. Repeated over winters, that shows up as raised, tilted, or stepped areas — most often near edges, steps, and anywhere water collects.
Heave is a drainage problem wearing a structural disguise. Re-setting the affected area without improving how water leaves it buys a season or two at most. It is also the mechanism that makes sealing genuinely preventive rather than merely cosmetic: less water into the joints and paver pores means less water in the base come January. Cause 5: the sub-base was never right
Occasionally the problem is original construction. A paver patio needs a properly compacted aggregate base of adequate depth beneath the bedding layer. Where that was skimped — thin, poorly compacted, or laid over unsuitable ground — the patio settles broadly and keeps settling, and repairs do not hold.
The diagnostic is repetition: if you have already re-leveled an area and it sank again within a season or two, stop repairing and have the base assessed. What this means for what you should spend
The ordering matters, because finish work over an unresolved structural problem is money thrown away:
- Fix the water first — downspouts, grade, and drainage. Free to moderate, and it protects everything done afterward.
- Then the structure — edge restraint and re-bedding any voids or low areas.
- Then the joints — clean out and refill with polymeric sand.
