A single dark oil ring or a rust streak is the most common reason Columbus homeowners give up on an otherwise good patio — and, not coincidentally, it's the job many local patio cleaners quietly decline. The good news is that most patio stains can be removed or dramatically reduced, but only if you treat them by type. Oil, rust, and organic staining each need a different approach, and using the wrong one usually sets the stain permanently or damages the surface around it. Here's how each one actually comes out.
Why pressure washing alone doesn't do it
Oil, rust, and tannin are absorbed into concrete, pavers, and stone — they aren't sitting on the surface like dirt. So blasting them with a pressure washer just cleans and brightens the material around the stain, which can make the stain stand out more, and on softer pavers or natural stone the high pressure etches and pits the surface. The stain has to be lifted chemically with the product made for it; pressure is only for rinsing afterward. Oil & grease: degrease, hot-wash, then poultice
Grill drippings, transmission drips tracked over from the driveway, and cooking-oil spills are the classic patio oil stains. Fresh oil usually lifts with a good degreaser worked into the stain and a hot-water wash. Older, set-in oil that has soaked into bare concrete needs a drawing poultice — an absorbent paste spread over the stain that pulls the oil back up out of the pores as it dries, then is scraped off. A deeply soaked stain may take two or three poultice cycles. Be realistic: oil that has been sitting in unsealed concrete for years can leave a faint ghost even after good treatment. Rust: an oxalic-acid remover, never a wire brush
Rust on a patio comes from metal furniture feet, a forgotten grill or planter, or — very commonly in central Ohio each spring — iron in lawn fertilizer that gets flung onto the patio by the spreader. Rust ignores degreasers and general cleaners; it needs a rust-specific remover, typically oxalic-acid based, that dissolves the iron oxide and then rinses clean. What makes rust worse: scrubbing it with a wire brush (it just grinds the iron into the pores) or hitting it with more pressure. Caught early, fertilizer rust is one of the most satisfying stains to remove completely.
Organic stains: leaves, tannin, and algae
Dark blotches under a tree, reddish tannin from fallen leaves and acorns, and the black-green film in shady corners are all organic. These respond to a low-pressure soft wash with the correct cleaner rather than to acids or degreasers. The mistake here is reaching for straight household bleach, which can strip the color out of pavers and stone and kill the plants and grass at the patio's edge. The white chalky film isn't a stain
If what looks like a "stain" is a chalky white haze, it's almost certainly efflorescence — mineral salts pushed to the surface from inside the concrete or pavers, not something spilled on top. It won't respond to stain removers and scrubbing harder just wears the surface; it's treated its own way. Seal it — or you'll be back here next summer
The reason a patio stained in the first place is that the surface is porous and unprotected. Removing the stain and walking away just resets the clock for the next spill. A fresh, small spill is a reasonable DIY.
